Best Places to Visit in the Lake District (A Guide for Nature Lovers)
The Lake District is one of those places that gets under your skin. Ancient fells, mirror-still water, dry stone walls winding over hillsides and a quiet beauty that feels like the rest of the world simply doesn't exist. England's most beloved national park has been inspiring artists, poets and walkers for centuries. Here's our guide to the best places to visit.
1. Windermere
England's largest natural lake is the Lake District's most iconic destination — and for good reason. At golden hour, with the fells reflected perfectly in the still water, Windermere is one of the most beautiful sights in Britain. Take a boat across to Bowness, walk the shores at dawn or simply sit and watch the light change. There's nowhere quite like it.
2. Grasmere
Forever associated with William Wordsworth, who lived here for much of his life, Grasmere is one of the most beautiful villages in England. A small lake surrounded by fells, a pretty village with excellent cafes and the famous Grasmere Gingerbread shop — it's worth the journey for the gingerbread alone.
3. Ambleside
A bustling market town at the northern end of Windermere, Ambleside is the perfect base for exploring the southern Lakes. Walk up to Stock Ghyll Force waterfall, take the ferry across Windermere or head up to Loughrigg Fell for views that stretch across the entire valley.
4. Coniston Water
Less visited than Windermere but arguably more beautiful, Coniston Water has a wildness and solitude that feels increasingly rare. It was here that Donald Campbell attempted his water speed record in 1967. Today it's a place of extraordinary peace — kayak across it at dawn and you'll have it almost entirely to yourself.
5. Ullswater
Often called the most beautiful lake in England, Ullswater winds through the northern fells in a series of curves that reveal new views around every bend. The Ullswater Steamers have been sailing its waters since 1859. Take the boat from Pooley Bridge to Howtown and walk back along the shoreline — one of the finest walks in Britain.
6. Keswick
The main town of the northern Lakes, Keswick sits between Derwentwater and the dramatic fell of Skiddaw. The Saturday market is excellent, the Pencil Museum is surprisingly fascinating and Derwentwater — with its wooded islands and fell backdrop — is one of the most painted lakes in Britain.
7. Hawkshead
A perfectly preserved medieval village in the southern Lakes, Hawkshead is the kind of place that makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Beatrix Potter lived nearby and the village has a quiet, storybook charm that the more popular Lake District towns sometimes lack.
